Why does a man and woman get married? Marriage is sacred because it comes from the very heart of God, it was God's design for a man and woman to be together as husband and wife. I remember when I first met Dennis and Jacqueline, we had this meaningful conversation about marriage and single blessedness. I was encouraged by their faith and committment not only for each other but also in honoring God thru their union. During the ceremony, the couple gave their vows and I was inspired on how they committed themselves and their relationship to Him. I would always feel godly love from both of them and it was such a privilege to witness God's promises upon them on their wedding day.

Of Neighbors and Schools (JM & Noelle)

JM is my neighbor but I never knew it 'till the day he visited me to view my wedding albums. After he and Noelle decided to book me as their wedding photographer we became closer and would even hang-out often. He is also into photography and we would have coffee drinks and learn from each other. Sometime, he traveled to Eurpoe and showed me his shots which made me want to visit Tuscany! Perhaps someday when I get married too I would like to spend time with my wife there. :D We had our portraits done at the Ateneo, since both of them met there and it felt kinda cool just strolling around the campus, somehow making me reminisce the good 'ol college days... Since, JM and I live in Loyola Heights I totally understood why he wanted a shot with the early evening traffic rush! A scene that only Katipuneros could love.

Pure Outdoor Fun (Prichard and Pia)

This was my second time to ride with Prichard and Pia and we took a different trail at Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The sweet thing about this ride is that I got the wide soft seat this time! :D So riding at the trail was a real breeze... I think the time we spent was good for us to bond and I also appreciate getting to know the couple at a deeper level, I really consider them as friends and I look forward to their wedding on February 6, 2010. Perhaps next time, I'll try to ride on that bull!

What I love about in my career is that I get time to spend with my clients. John and Shirley are just so fun to be with and this was a last minute decision to go for a prenup, hanging out with them and sharing thoughts was very much valued. Spinning wheels at San Mateo

I've always been a bike fan, but after college my lifestyle just changed dramatically and I never got to ride with 2 wheels ever since. Prichard and Pia are real bike lovers and over dinner one time, they asked me if I would join them in one of their bike trails (I was like, sure!) and Prich had extra bikes he could lend me. So, this was really a cool idea and I knew we would have fun. I've been running lately and riding on a trail would be like a cross-train work-out for me, so how could I ever say NO!??

We took the trail in San Mateo and the bike I used was like super cool, I just could not believe how insanely light it was! Prich really loves his expensive bikes! :D

I love these machines! But one thing that bothered me was the ultra-narrow and stiff seat the bikes had. Prich and Pia mentioned that the one I was using was extra soft already and I really was not used to it since my ancient bike had wide and really soft padding on it! During my test run, I could already feel the muscle pain and I was just prepared to use a wheel chair after...

Riding is not just fun but challenging as well. I love the variety of terrain, from gravel to loose soil, mud and hard rock it definitely was a challenge, oh and there were dangerous obstacles along the way too.

Ahhh, this was the hi-light of the ride - delicious breakfast after a tiring stage!

This was basically a fun and bonding experience, the prenup is yet to come. Thank you Prich and Pia for the time, adventure and friendship, I'm so excited to see you both finally tie the knot!

Praise God for His wonderful creations, these are some of the moments that we get to appreciate His wonders!

It was such a wonderful experience to use a Leica M8 to capture wedding moments. A friend actually asked me if you could really spot the difference in the shots of an M8 compared to the latest DSLRs? My answer was straightforward-YES! Not only is it a breeze to handle, since rangefinders are compact and light weight but I used small fixed lenses as well. The images are crisp and sharp, excellent color right out of the card and it has this solid feel and response of good ol' German technology! I like to thank John Co again for allowing me to test drive the M8, looking forward to the M9. Coming up, the on-site AVP I made using all M8 shots.

My Best Friend's Wedding - Mark.Hazel.09.19.09

I have known Mark since I was 8 years old, we've been best buds ever since and he is like the closest relative I'd ever had (We were always mistaken to be cousins, most of my relatives are scattered all over Argentina...). I was really pleased and blessed by their wedding, I have witnessed how happy and crazy Mark and Hazel were! They had a rocker theme and for the first time I actually appreciated rock music for bridal applications... I enjoyed their wedding too, being a secondary sponsor I found it an honor to place the veil on Mark's shoulder and it was also a privilege for me to lead in opening the reception with a prayer. How I wish I knew how to move with rock music on the dance floor, oh well...Haha. I had my team document the wedding but I felt eager to shoot my best bud's big day and I was blessed again by my dear friend, John Co for allowing me to use his new Leica M8! I had two lenses with me, a 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2. I love it! The M8 was just fantastic for weddings! I wonder if I'll offer a package that would require me to use M8s, hmmm...Lets wait and see. :D

I have known Mark since I was about 8 years old, doing his engagement portraits reminded me how time really flies! Hazel, being a real Rock fan and Mark has always been into bands and is a very good drummer and singer as well, made this an interesting session for us. It was good seeing Lanie again, she did the HMU for Hazel, and I was also pleased to have worked with Trish who did the styling and suggested layouts for us. Formula 1 Grand Prix - Malaysia 4.5.09

Yesterday was my first time to watch a Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. One thing I could never forget is the adrenalin you get from the sound of the engines screaming at full throttle! The excitement level is soooo high that no wonder you would see people traveling across the globe just to witness the event. I was seated at the ringside area at the straight way right before corner one, here the cars were running at full speed and just about to decelerate before entering the turn. The rain poured but the drama continued, congratulations to Jenson Button for wining the race! :D

I was challenged to take this shot in a very dim location. I used three speedlights to lit the couple and background, it took about 5 mins to get all 3 lights tuned in.

The rings symbolizes man and wife and I love the idea that Christ is always mentioned as the center of the relationship. I thought it was symbolic that the couple were lifted by Jesus on the Cross!

Beauty shots are a favorite and I always like to put my fingerprint on the portraits I take. I always get to see my self in the bride's pupils.

Together with the members of the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines, we started our day having breakfast with Gov. Chavit Singson. We gave him a quick lesson in photography and took some portraits of him as well. He really is a nice guy and just hanging out and having a conversation with him was cool. I'm glad to be back in Boracay to cover a wedding again. Indeed it really is an intimate experience to have a wedding in this little island. It was a pleasure to shoot with my cuz Marla who came from the US and is currently having an exhibit at Silver Lens Gallery, she is a fine art photographer and her wedding portfolio just blew me away! I learned so much from her and Tina this past few days and hopefully I could apply what I have learned from them in my wedding photography. Marla was shooting in film and that inspires me to discipline myself and focus more on the creative side of event documentation. Extreme Prenup: Ricson + Mabel

When Ricson and Mabel proposed that we do our engagement portraits at Mt. Pulag, I honestly thought it would be a walk in the park. Doing some research, I discovered that it is the second highest mountain in the Philippines at 2,922 meters above sea level - still had no idea how difficult this would be... After 22 hours of land travel,12 grueling hours of trekking and sleeping for 7 hours below 10 degrees, It finally struck me that this is not your typical engagement portrait! Being a typical guy not exposed to the harsh conditions of mountaineering I'm just so glad I survived the challenge. Thanks Ricson and Mabel for the unforgettable experience. At this point, I wonder what greater challenge awaits me in my career?? This is one engagement portrait session that I definitely have classified as "EXTREME!" :D

Some photos and Biblical Prophecies for sharing

Ok, now comes the fun stuff! My heart just pounds really loud when I go over my photos and look back and reminisce the moments of the photographs that I took. I'm going really overwhelmed with some particular photos in my iPhoto catalog, especially those I took in Israel! Here are some 'em.

The Garden of Gethsemane

The location were Christ Jesus was arrested by Roman soldiers and betrayed thru the infamous kiss of Judas, one of numerous prophecies fulfilled in God's redemption plan for us.

The Eastern Gate

This sentry is located at the eastern side of the Temple in Jerusalem, strictly reserved for VIP's such as kings and royalty that enter the temple courts. The exact gateway that Jesus Christ made His way thru at Palm sunday greeted by the Jews waving palm leaves and laying it before Him as He passes by. Another prophecy fulfilled clearly stating that He is not only the King of the Jews but the Messiah as well. The gate is now sealed off by the Muslims that took over Jerusalem, the Bible tells us that in His second coming He will once again enter thru this side of the Temple.

The Dome of the Rock

Islamic mosque that now is situated in what is speculated to be the location of the Tabernacle during the second temple period. This is considered as holy ground not only for the Muslims but for Jews as well.

Sea of Galilee

A lake actually, is were Jesus and His disciples began their ministry by performing miracles and converting the people. It really gave me goose bumps every time I would reflect and meditate by the shore. Indeed, it is an overwhelming feeling to imagine the Lord walking in the same body of water that I was facing!

Har Megiddo

This is what came to be called "The Valley of Armageddon". The ancient highway which links the northern and southern countries in the western region of the middle east. The major battles during the Old Testament times occurred frequently in this route and Bible prophecy reveals that the last major battle in earth will be once again in this valley, right before the rapture.

Mount of Olives

Directly facing the Eastern wall and gate of the Temple of Jerusalem, Jesus Christ will descend from the heavens and shall set foot again in this place in His second coming right before re-entering the Temple courts.

So, I haven't been blogging quite a while since I'm a busy busy bee nowadays! I suddenly missed it and took a break from work to post this. I've been doing wedding albums here and there I'm just at my peak were I'm totally enjoying it! I'm really excited with the designs I'm doing and experimenting, I am applying new techniques and its just overwhelming and so cool. :D Sorry, no preview this time of my album designs, perhaps drop by or just invite me for a cup of Starbucks so I could show you my new ideas. Hehehe... ;)

RAW Power

Shooting in RAW format has always been a complicated process in imaging. The file size is enormous, taking a lot of space from the memory card and hard drive. Down with the workflow, calibrating and adjusting the elements of the file such as: color, hue, sharpening, assigning the right color space and color temperature make it a long and painstaking procedure! However, it has its advantages over the commonly used compressed JPEG format. It has almost 10 times more color information that gives the photo a smooth continuous color gradation which gives it a more natural "Film look" when properly tuned. This in a way, evades the overly "Digital look" criticism. Without any special filter to be added to my image to enhance the overall artistic quality, the color, sharpness and detail come close to the rendition I always wanted from film.

I am always excited of new assignments that comes my way, and recently my job was to take images from above! I was tasked to take aerial shots of a school in Manila, we used a Robinson R44 rotor craft which was small, light and could hover at a low altitude. The ride was smooth and quick, we passed the location about 4 times at different altitudes (as low as 400 ft.) and different angles. After firing away at every circle we made, we headed back to the hangar and that ended our session for the day.

My First step in Israel

Shalom!

These past few days have been very meaningful and tiring for me! I've been around Israel for about three days and I am so blessed to be present where key biblical events transpired. There is just so much to understand and appreciate in Israel that it definitely is a place that everybody should experience! Indeed, Israel is the land of Milk and Honey, as God promised His chosen people. It is blessed with beautiful climate and landscape. Thru out the country side you will discover that it is rich in agriculture and livestock. Dry and cool air breeze surrounds the cities. The historical sites are well preserved and will give you a clear perspective of its past. I'm staying by the Sea of Galillee and it definitely is an awesome sight! I'll be soon going to Jerusalem and the Dead Sea and I'll keep you all posted with even more images of the Promised Land.

The City of Rock, Petra

I just came from Jordan, were I stayed in Amman and made a trip to Petra. Its an ancient city in the southern part of Jordan were its rocks formed thru earthquakes, wind and water and these rocks were carved into homes. It is a tourist attraction and is now part of The Seven Wonders of the World. It was such an amazing sight. Here are some images of this majestic city.

I'm packed and ready to go, I leave tomorrow for the Holy Land! I'm really excited not only because I'll have an opportunity to document the people and the places I'll be going to but primarily we will be having an in-depth bible study tour. Reading the history and events that transpired in the bible is so overwhelming and visiting the place is just as exciting! It will be a long trip, from Manila to Dubai, then Amman, Jordan then Israel. I'll try to post some images by the weekend. I just ask all my friends out there to pray for a meaningful and safe trip for our group. To God be all the glory! :D

Today I woke up in Hanoi, Vietnam! I can say I had a unique experience as I first looked out my window and walked in the streets of Hanoi. There were lots of fruit and vegetable traders and lots and lots of scooters and bicycles! Its just so amazing how people manage to cross intersections at fast pace without running to other people! Noodles were great! I'm now back in my hotel room planning for our next destination - Halong Bay! I'll post more sights of Hanoi very soon. :D

A new day, a new assignment...

I was on assignment yesterday to photograph personnel and the major equipments in a facility that fabricates metals for aircraft panels and machinery. The place was cluttered and relatively dark in most areas. I was able to achieve a balanced ambient lighting effect that make the images look natural and gave it a "strobeless" feel on it. I used different types of gels and diffusers and of course I was again working on Nikon CLS technology to do the trick.

Mother bird rescues her baby!

As I was walking at our backyard, I could not help notice several birds flying really low and somewhat in a "panic mode". I saw one bird still on the ground, I came in closer and saw that it was a baby maya that could not fly which caused its parents to fly like crazy when they saw me approaching. I quickly ran inside the house and grabbed my camera with the intention to capture the rescue attempt of the little bird's parents.

I lied flat on the pavement for about 15 minutes as I watched the rescue team fly over me and survey the area. I had to move back from my position to give them a bit of security that I would not be in range to harm them. Then, finally! The moment I've been waiting for! Mother lands beside her baby!

My shutter release goes off, bursting at a rate of 5 frames per second! The sound resembling that of a sub machine gun...Mother bird panics, and soars thru the air! I finally realize that by using my 200mm lens, it would not give me a safe distance to capture the moment in stealth. I give up my position and entered the house, giving the little bird's parents a worry free opportunity to pick up their baby.

I'll probably save up so one day I could buy a 600mm lens and be more effective in capturing wild life photography. I certainly enjoyed the thrill of capturing such moments. :D

Here are more food shots that I've done and of all the genres in photography, shooting food is a totally different language which makes it so interesting! :D Doesn't that chicken look delicious?! The Red Ice Tea shot for Kitaro took me three attempts to get it right! Wheeew!!! I definitely need a cold drink after that one.

Here are some new products we can expect soon from Kitaro! This time, it really made me hungry during the photo shoot! :p I remember before I left seeing Leslie looking at the tray of sushi, and saying: "I love Kitaro", It made me think, hmmm...me too! :O

I got to bring home one big tray of sushi and I guess I'll never go hungry again, haha! Go out and treat yourself for some Kitaro sushi today, you deserve it! :)

My friend Jonas invited me to the Philippine Canine Club, Inc.'s All-Breeds Championship Dog Show. As an enthusiast, he was sharing to me the different breed types and characteristics of the dogs which was very educational. It even made me think of how diverse we people are as well! A great opportunity to learn new stuff and take some photos. They were so adorable and amazing, especially the large breeds! My all time favorites: Pug! (especially the round, over weight ones!) :D , Boxer, Doberman and Siberian Husky! I'm glad the Pomeranian won "Best in Show", it was my best bet! Check out some of the images of yesterdays event:

The Holy Land

Ok, I'm really excited about my trip to Israel this coming May. Shalom! I'm kinda tense in the sense that I'm worried on how I will pack! Should I bring most of my gear and take good shots of the places I'll be going to?? But I am overly excited as well to learn from the tour and fellowship with other Christians. It is also the 60th anniversary of the nation's statehood, it was a prophecy foretold thousands of years ago (during the old testament times) that Israel will be reunited as a nation in 1948!

As part of the Conference/Tour, we will visit places such as the City of David, Western wall excavations, Garden of Gethsemane, Garden Tomb, Samaria, Dead Sea, Galilee and Judea!

Let there be Sushi!

I had a new assignment yesterday and I was tasked to shoot some food shots for a popular local sushi bar - Kitaro! It got me really excited to do this because the last time I shot food was at Mark Floro's Food Photography class at PCCI.

I brought all my stuff, you name it! The heavy light stands, strobe heads, umbrellas and soft boxes, camera and lenses and my 17" powerbook and without any assistant that moment I just thought that lifting all those equipment will just exhaust my energy! So, I said to myself, " I don't really need all this stuff!" Immediately, I pulled my D200, 2 Sb-800's and Su-800 and that was about it! Using Nikon's Advanced Lighting technology, I was able to achieve studio output quality in my layouts.

Kitaro is coming out with some new products that you just would like to try when it is made available. Believe me, the sushi really rocks! Check this out:

Flight schedules for 2008

I have several scheduled trips this year in different locations and in case some of you would like to schedule a prenup /portrait session I would definitely be glad to accommodate you. I'll be going to Vietnam this April 13-18, 2008, after that I'll be going to the Holy Land, Israel on May 7-21, 2008 as part of my equipping for my calling to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in the ministry, I don't think I'll be able to do a prenup session here but I would be glad to meet up and fellowship with other pinoys who would be there at that time! and perhaps take some souvenir photos :D. Then I'm off to Singapore on July for a workshop on the 22 and 23rd, I could probably stretch my stay there to about 7 days. Finally, I'll be going to Sydney this August, date is not yet confirmed, but for those interested please schedule an appointment with me soon so we could discuss the possibilities in arranging the dates.

Free Hugs in Manila

Last February 23, we went out on the streets to give everyone a Free Hug! Together with Kim, Christopher and Dexter we were able to go to 4 different sites were we found lots of people that just needed a hug and did it brighten their day! We are caught up with anxiety and stress on a daily basis that a simple gesture of love recieved from a stranger could just change the way we see life. So, why don't we all go out and hug a stranger today! :D FREE HUGS!!!!!

As I was working on some revisions on my album layouts I stumbled across this file. This is actually a shot of a flower girl putting on her shoes. As I look at the image, I could just imagine the emotion and anticipation she had at the moment. Perhaps similar to the bride? A bit nervous? or simply excited? Or maybe both?? what do you think???

I recieved my new Nikon SU-800 Commander unit today and it got me really excited to test it out! It has been out of stock here in Manila and after checking in about 10 stores in Hong Kong my brother was able to purchase one for me. Finally, a faster way of adjusting the settings for the Advanced Lighting System which would require me to toggle with the D200's menu when using the pop-up flash in commander mode. (saves me a lot of time and batteries!)

What better way to try it out?? I asked my niece, Alyssa to model for me. Using two SB-800's and setting them to TTL mode with a little fine tuning to blend with the ambient light of our living room and in A Mode with the D200.

To really push it to the test (flash and my niece) I asked Alyssa to jump and by bouncing the two flash groups off the white walls I was able to achieve the awesome stopping power of the SB-800 units!

A month to express your Love!

As a witness and story teller in the weddings I attend to, I definitely have my share of practical learnings. In spite of all the fun and laughter, deep inside my heart cries for joy when I see the love between Ian and Ina which manifests the greatest love of all - the love of Christ Jesus, who has taught us what loving unconditionally is all about. We live, breath and dedicate our lives to Him who is worthy.

Miracle to those who seek Him: Normally, it would take 2-2.5 hours to prepare an on-site AVP to be presented at the reception. Here it goes: At 1 hour 40 minutes of editing, my time creeps to an end. Lifting my burden to the Lord, down to 5 seconds we launch the AVP successfully! This really doubled my heart rate! But what I learned also is to put ALL my trust and faith to Him at ALL times and He would take care of the rest.

To God be all the Glory!

Using this plastic toy camera, it allows me to percieve the creative concept before taking the shot allowing me to stretch the right side of my brain even further! I was thinking, how about a full wedding lomography package out in the market??! What better way to start Lomo but to have a self-portrait! :D

Okay, so after the numerous meetings with clients, hanging out with friends and family at Starbucks Coffee I was able to earn my Starbucks 2008 Planner. I know January is almost over, but hey! Who cares??? We still got 11 months left on the calendar, and guess what?! I thought that I'll hand over this wonderful item to one of you out there! :D

A new old toy...

I recently purchased a Nikon F5 for my "hybrid" wedding album package. I just love the excitement and discipline film photography gives, not to mention the high quality images it produces. The F5 was the last film SLR by Nikon before the introduction of the D1 series (digital SLR). Almost two years ago Nikon released the F6 - a fantastic camera!. Hopefully I'll get another F100 soon (for the second time).

Not only do their names sound good together but they make a great couple! On-location, on a bright sunny day it was a real challenge to put Nikon Creative Lighting System to the test again. Balancing ambient with flash light. My objective is to give a cinematic treatment - meaning, to achieve a high lighted face in complex lighting situations rather than having a casted shadow that would make the portrait mediocre in value. Don't they look great together??!

Today is BLOG day! Finally,after 44 days I broke my silence and I'm back to posting here in my blog. I had a blast last wedding season and it was just the best I've had ever since I started my career in wedding photography. I'd like to take this time to say a thanksgiving prayer to God almighty, who with his grace and love blessed me this past months with strength, creativeness, patience and new friends! Join me as I pray...

Heavenly Father, creator of heaven and earth, I come before you to give you thanks and praise for the numerous blessings I have received from you. I thank you for the trust you have given me thru my clients, for sustaining me and delivering me from any harm or misfortunes and especially for giving me the inspiration to glorify you thru my work. Indeed you are a great God and you have always been faithful to your children.

Father I just ask that you may continue to bless us thru your word and Holy spirit. I also pray for my clients, as they enter a new stage in their lives and may you just shine upon them with your grace and guide them, fill them with wisdom, understanding and discernment, fill their hearts with love and joy that they may be faithful servants of your kingdom Father and be witnesses of your great love. This we ask in the mighty name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I just came back from SPPP's Christmas party/outing held at Jonel's Resort in Calamba, Laguna. As a requirement for membership with the Society, each probationary member is to provide a studio portrait of its current members.

I took the challenge to apply my examination by accomplishing studio portraiture - outside the studio! Using 3 Nikon speedlight units and conceptual lighting techniques I have produced my portrait entries which I will be submitting in January to the committee.

Its been about 4 years since I last shot in film. In my previous wedding, i brought my Nikon F90 and some Kodak B&W Film to just take a few shots and compare it with my digital capture. I am still very much impressed with the results. Here are a few images scanned from the roll I used.

Up for speed! Another Strobist challenge...

Dark and raining, it was a real challenge to capture the go-karts in action in Lenovo's event last night. Again using 2 SB-800s to get the job done, situating the speedlights on opposite sides of the track and after several attempts I was able to nail it! Like I said before, having to provide light without bringing those large and heavy strobes is a real breeze on assignment, I guess the hardest part was focusing the racers as they power out of the fastest bend on the track! :D

Too bad for John, he thought that by literally eating a strobe that would make him a Strobist! :D

My friend Ryan, asked me to shoot some old signature bags he had and I instantly thought that it would be good to put my sb-800's to the test! using only 2 speedlights, Ryan and his partner Kevin were very much satisfied with the results. As for me, making my clients happy without having to bring my studio lights was a real breeze for me!

Tomorrow I'm shooting for another friend of mine Pocholo, who wants some food shots for his resto and then I'm headed to Speedzone in the evening to shoot some Go-kart racing. Definitely, another day for a strobist put to the test! :D
